Weeks 7-8
I keep on advancing in order to be able to plan my final product. I'm investigating if music should be heard while studying as many people turned out to do it according to the survey.
Music while studying
Many researches have been done about studying with music. I found one that was very interesting. It consisted in a test they made to a group of people in which they were given a test to complete and while they were doing it, they had one quiet environment and other environments with sounds: the same word over and over again, songs of lyrics (their choice), songs they didn't like and random numbers between 1-9. The results showed that the tests results were affected when the music that was playing was either liked or disliked or random. It said it made the same difference as if you had someone speaking to you while you where studying. In other words, this study says that the best way to study is in a quiet place, because music with vocals can be very distracting.

In another study, they found out that the effects on tests in the people really depended in each person. Some where affected by the music but some even improved their grade. They argued that still more research should be done to see wether is the beat or the lyrics that make an impact in human concentration.

According to this page, some people prefer to listen to music while studying because it takes them away from the city sounds and outside sounds. They believe this is good as long as the music you are playing is calmed (not heavy metal or rock), preferably has no lyrics or hard beats. The question you could ask yourself to see if you can work with music is: Am I spending more time listening to the music than I am spending on my studies?
Music can change your brain waves to make you achieve a higher state of awareness/concentration. Instrumentals are usually the best for studying/homework as (as long as decently light) they take you into the alpha brainwave state. You get your most heightened sense of awareness and concentration in this type of brainwave. There are also some people who can't concentrate in complete silence.. they are the ones who can use background music to study.

*As a summary, no lyrics music can be helpful when studying.

Skills
The ATL skills I've showed in this part of the process are:
Thinking skills:
Critical Thinking
Thinking skills:
Critical Thinking
- Develop contrary arguments. (After researching if music really helped to revise, I can state contrary arguments on why or how is it good for some people but for others not)
- Make decisions based on chosen criteria, standards and conditions. (I have to include a poster in my posters about how music while studying can't really be used).
- Analyse one’s own and others’ thought processes to think about how one thinks and how one learns. (I saw that many students listen to music while studying so I wanted to analyze if what they were doing was correct or not, to try to understand why some prefer to do it and why others don't).
